Winter Tennis Kicks Off At Backwell

The onset of the season of cooler weather is no barrier to the members of Backwell Tennis club who begin in earnest their program of winter social and league tennis. On their all-weather courts, the club holds 6 weekly sessions of social club play for all abilities in the evenings and Saturday afternoons.

Backwell has a thriving organised tennis rota involving over 100 individual players, while also continuing youth coaching in the late afternoons for 50+ youngsters who wish to improve their tennis skills over the winter months.

Pictured above are left to right, Leo Kaboutian, Nicky Jehring, Sara Wood and Pat O’Callaghan gathering for their session on a somewhat chilly Saturday afternoon in November, soon to be warmed up by their exertions on-court!

Backwell also competes in North Somerset and Avon winter leagues, this year no less than 5 adult and 10 youth teams are in active competition. Says winter tennis coordinator, Patrick O’Callaghan, “Our members at Backwell love to play tennis all year round and tennis nowadays is truly a sport that can be enjoyed in every season.

Thanks to the investments we have made over the years, there are five high quality courts at Backwell which enable tennis to be played whatever the weather conditions. In the coming years we fully intend to continue with investments which enhance the playing experience for tennis-lovers of all ages”.
